A Chimney Sheep® is a highly efficient, removable chimney draught excluder made from felted Herdwick sheep’s wool. Our original and best-selling product ensures your home is heated efficiently by keeping the heat in and the cold draughts out.
We think a Chimney Sheep® is a no brainer! Why? Here are a few reasons:
This Chimney Sheep is suitable for round flues up to 9″ (230mm) in diameter. A round sheep will also happily fit an oblong, square, or trapezium chimney opening. This size is suitable for flues with a corner to corner measurement of up to 10″ (250mm). It comes with a 6″ handle and 6″ extension rod, giving 12″ of reach altogether. If you’re not sure what size to get, have a look at our sizing chart.

A Chimney Sheep® draught excluder is made from highly durable and naturally breathable Herdwick wool, from a Herdwick sheep. The wool is treated with a unique ionic protect plasma which makes it 100% moth proof and aids with the longevity of the Chimney Sheep® (we have customers that have had the same ones for nearly 10 years!). It is then felted to create a unique flexible yet sturdy material. This makes the Chimney Sheep® perfect to plug the gap just above a fireplace.
The woollen pad of the Chimney Sheep® compresses to fit perfectly flues of all shapes and sizes making it far more efficient than any other chimney draught excluder on the market. Inflatable chimney blockers and chimney umbrellas require a small gap to be left in your flue to allow ventilation but because wool is naturally breathable, a Chimney Sheep® doesn’t require that gap. Instead, once inserted into your chimney flue the 4.43 tog rated Chimney Sheep® acts like a duvet, blocking 95% airflow into and out of your chimney, whilst naturally permitting sufficient ventilation. It works to prevent warm air from escaping up the chimney and stopping cold air from coming in via the chimney when not in use, reducing the ‘stack effect’ phenomenon.
It is as simple as that! Read more about the stack effect and how a Chimney Sheep® works here.
The list is endless but here are a few of the main benefits:
It really does! Don’t take our word for it, here is all the evidence:
Absolutely. We are really passionate about the environment and sustainability. Everything from our sourcing of wool to our packaging is chosen with the environment in mind and the aim of our reducing our carbon footprint as much as we can.
All Chimney Sheep® are made here in our factory in Maryport, Cumbria, using Herdwick wool sustainably sourced from farmers around Cumbria. We collect the wool once a year which we call our ‘Operation Wool’ project. We pay the local farmers a fair price for this which is usually more than the market price and helps to support them.
The felt head of a Chimney Sheep® usually lasts about 10 years and is 100% wool which means it is completely biodegradable and compostable. The handles are made with recyclable plastic therefore are extremely durable and designed to last for decades. We have designed them so that when the felt head does wear out, you can just replace it with a new felt head and keep the same handle to reduce waste and the use of excess plastic. When the time comes and you have to say goodbye to your felt head, get in touch with us.
By using a Chimney Sheep® you are doing your bit to reduce your carbon footprint and we are really passionate about helping you to reduce your CO2 output even further. That is why we have set up our very own Community Interest Company, Buy Land Plant Trees, so that with each purchase a proportion of the profits will go towards planting trees on agriculturally poor land. All you need to do is measure your chimney. We promise, it sounds more complicated than it really is. Head over to our simple instructions which walk you through it. If you do have any trouble though, just get in touch and we can help.
Our standard Chimney Sheep sizes will fit the majority of chimney flues. However, each and every chimney (like us!) is unique so if your chimney doesn’t look like it will fit one of our standard sizes, contact us with the measurements and we will give you a quote for a made-to-measure Chimney Sheep® that will fit your chimney perfectly!
Alistair Ward –
My chimney Sweep recommended chimney sheep when we moved into our new home. He gave me the measurement of my chimney. Using the chat facility, I was advised to buy the correct size. It was delivered promptly and fitted straight into the chimney. It does exactly what it says. Notice draught reduction and heat loss straight away. Reduces noise from birds etc. great product!
The Neary’s –
Works a treat. Just like the last one.
Catherine Scallon –
Initially ( through no fault of Chimney Sweep) I ordered the wrong size and even that size made a great improvement, with a gap at each side. Now we have the right size, the difference is remarkable and the draughts swirling around our feet in the sitting room have gone.
It’s easy to install and remove, although you do have to be careful to keep it straight when you take it out, so the debris and soot stay on the top until you have it in a bag.
Also, when you first get it, unlike is, put a bag around to first try it, then if it doesn’t fit, you can exchange it.
We also love the enamel heart we ordered, as a reminder to take it out before lighting the fire. It looks really smart. However, you don’t need one, strictly speaking, because it some with a sturdy metal warning tag.
I note some older reviews complaining about having to order a separate extension. I can only guess that this is now included, because both ours came with an extension, which, as it happens, we don’t need.
If you’re wondering whether to buy? Do it: you won’t regret it. It’s a low tech, but high impact solution.
Nicola Dunklin –
Perfect for the job, easy to install. The one thing I would say is the size guide recommended a 10″ cheep for our 6″ circular hole, it is too big really so it ended up being quite a bit too large, it still plugged the gap as it folded in on itself. 8″ would have been better. Lovely product and a very ethical company, we should all be choosing to shop at places that do better.
Simon –
May not stop the sound of the wind in the flue but keeps the heat in the room and the draught out! Excellent.
John Pickford –
Easy to install. Has cut out drafts and the wind noise from a very noisy metal chimney liner. Great to know it is wool and not acrylic. Would be perfect if the handle was not plastic so I am being picky at 4 star not 4.9.
James Maddison –
Does what it is supposed to, very early days but no complaints with product at this stage
Steveonline –
I originally ordered a 10inch round but it was too big. Be aware that the sizing guide asks for length and width, so it’s assuming a square hole. the description of the 8inch round says it’s for flues up to 7inches. Perfect for me. I’ve got a 7inch copex liner.
The sheep work perfectly. The up draught in the flu is reduced to trickle now. Just enough for ventilation.
There is still a lot noise though, so don’t expect silence if you live in a windy place with a noisy steel liner. Having said that, the sheep are only really draught excluders anyway.
I did originally cut the noise out completely by stuffing an old duvet cover into the liner. The problem with that though, is that it also blocks all the ventilation, so the duvet cover was soaked through and mouldy when I removed it.
All in all, the chimney sheep is the perfect solution and I highly recommend them. My chimney is now draught free, and, as it is also now redundant I’ll address the noise from the top.
G.Smith –
Does what it says
CHARLES B. –
DOES THE JOB EXACTLY AS SUGGESTED AND EASY AND CLEAN TO REMOVE IF YOU WANT TO LIGHT A FIRE. IN OUR LARGER RECTANGULAR CHIMNEY IT WAS A BIT AWKWARD TO GET IT TO STAY IN PLACE BUT ONCE IN HAS BEEN EXCELLENT AND THE DOWNDRAFT MAKING THE ROOM COLD HAS BEEN ELIMINATED. IN THE CIRCULAR CHIMNEYS THEY ARE ABSOLUTLEY EXCELLENT.
M M Wilson –
We have been looking for a way to block our flue easily when we are not using the open fire. The 10″ chimney sheep is perfect for that. It arrived very quickly and was easy to fit.
John –
Great product stopping the draught up the chimney. Love the company’s sustainable and eco-friendly ethos.
Nicola C –
Have been looking for something like this for ages, all the others I had seen were quite expensive so when I saw this was a great idea. Website was good to give instructions on how to use. Works really well and pleased with my purchase.
Michelle Shortt –
Great product. Made living room much warmer!
Jonathan Evans-Jones –
Excellent chimney draft excluder. The second I have bought from Chimney Sheep. Good value.
David –
Once the additional extension handles arrived (I should have measured properly first!!), very simple, quick & easy to install in our large Victorian fireplace. Very happy with speed of delivery & service from Chimney Sheep. Would definitely recommend.
Pam –
great eco friendly product. The chimney sheep fits perfectly and stops the draught and howling wind noise. was easy to install. Would highly recommend it
B R –
Cant believe the difference this has made. The wind used to whistle in the chimney.. much quieter now. The sitting room used to be drafty.. no drafts now.
Susan in the Admin dept was great when I asked lots of questions.. many thanks.
The only challenge was measureing the chimney… but I got there in the end!!
Thank you.
Tim J –
Great product that does the job well. Good to support the sheep wool industry where we can
Debbie Coleman –
Does its job, excludes draughts and is easily removed prior to fire lighting. Seems robust and hopefully will last a good while. The service, [I spoke to Ann] was brilliant and helpful without trying to sell me anything I didn’t need.
Highly recommended.
Peter M –
Your chimney isn’t something you reckon on doing ‘battle’ with in a fairly modern house, but the problems associated have been a bit of a curse for many years.
I tried a balloon, and whilst it was quite good, it developed a slow puncture and needed regular re-inflation. Fortunately, after a year or so of this, we found ‘Chimney Sheep’. What’s not to like about it? Well made, supported by good service and a reasonable price, we now have the pesky chimney under some sort of control.
There is very little sound heard now and the snug fit of the Sheep in the flue has removed any sign of a draught. Extremely happy with our purchase.
Eóin –
This does exactly what it’s supposed to do. Fits perfectly into and sits in flue. Hasn’t budged for months and no issue with drafts. It can be easily pulled out to light the fire and popped back in once it’s cooled down.
It’s a bit more expensive than a balloon but far better value for money. Its sturdy – it won’t pop, and can be easily removed and replaced when you want to light a fire.
Red Dragon –
We could’ve got one of those balloons to do the job of blocking up the chimney in our new home, but decided to go for this, off-the-wall product.
Can’t fault it!
Amazon Customer –
I ordered a 10 inch for an 8 inch flue, as recommended. It works really well, stopping down draught, except it is a very loose fit. So sometimes it slips sideways and almost falls down and lets the cold air down. I wonder if I had bought a bigger one, would it have worked better.
Josh Pearson –
It was not as thick as expected, but it is very dense and strong as per the type of wool.It seems to be doing the job.Took some manoeuvring into place as we were between sizes and went up. Can still hear the wind in the chimney but this may be the fault of the cowl. 4 stars as it is still in the testing stage for us.
Shedman –
A great idea and one that actually works. Ours is used in a lined chimney (steel liner) and is a little awkward to fit as it tends to turn on its side but once properly in place works a treat. Worth the cost.
MAT –
This was bought to replace a previous chimney sheep. The handle broke off the old one but the replacement seems to have a sturdier connection with the handle and extension being more substantial. It works well keeping the draft out and heat in. Used a 10inch diameter for a 8 inch round flue. Perfect job.
Peter A. Williams –
No complaints about the product quality, however my chimney is 10 Inches so I ordered the 10 inch version and it’s not as tighter fit as I was expecting.
J. K. Ensell –
Arrived yesterday, and the living room is already noticeably warmer. I suspect it has saved us a chilly winter in a new house!
It was a little tricky to install without folds and gaps appearing – you may need to be quite flexible! – but worth it.
(Bought the 10 inch round sheep for a chimney with a 9 inch square opening, narrowing to a 6 inch round flue.)
Woody –
A nice well made product that keeps the heat in our lounge from escaping up the chimney. Very pleased!
We have central heating and rarely use the open fireplace so ideal for us.
Would be very messy using this with a sooty chimney though!
Roberto Beggi –
We used the Chimney Sheep before and have now come back to this brand after moving house.
The chimney plug comes in many sizes, which is very helpful. We also like that it’s made from natural wool.
In addition, extension rods are available if the chimney sheep is a bit far to reach.
NOTE: make sure to order a bit bigger than your chimney flu bu at least a couple of inches to ensure a good fit.
Amazon Customer –
Seems ok so far . No draughts . So it works.
S. Ward –
Had chimney balloons for years, decided to try this instead when the last balloon got old and saggy. It fits well, stays in place and eliminates draughts. I bought two extension rods because our chimney only narrows quite high up in the fireplace. Well worth a try.
RUTH S. –
Simple to fit, but make sure you buy the right diameter. Noticeable increase in temperature and reduction in draft, so must also be saving money.
Amazon Customer –
Item works well. The handle is small and they keep trying to sell me an extension which it should come with
Mrs Susan Atherton –
Installed this 10 inch excluder in a 9 inch circular stainless steel vent for a wood burner. It’s best to go one size up for the diameter required. Did this before installing an electric fire in the fire place. Excluder could do with being a little more rigid for a tight fit.
Being over sized helped it to sit well in the vent. Hopefully it will stay in place.
pam –
Used this to keep wind noise out of chimney when fire is not lit. Keeps out drafts too. Just a bit awkward to insert but works well
P. Illing –
My late Victorian coal fire place has a small opening (9″) but the flue enlargens behind, making a balloon awkward. This device fits nicely into the opening, with its off-grey colour and felt texture as a suitable contrast to the ornate black iron fireplace. The draw from the fireplace has palpably decreased, with the room feeling less drafty straightaway. The felt enables some ventilation, important in older houses as they need to breathe. In a carpeted room, with double-glazing, this serves both purposes of reducing the constant draw of air while not completely cutting off ventilation.
A. Roberton –
Does exactly what it is designed to do. It keeps draughts from the chimney down to a minimum and as an added bonus, it muffles the noisy bird sounds that come from the chimney pot. The handle makes it easy to fit and to remove if you need to use the fire in the colder months.
I imagine this should last for years, which makes it extremely good value.
Dave Lister –
A bit annoyed that I had to buy an extension separately but it does a good job of keeping the draught out. The inside of my chimney is about 9 inch diameter circle, so this fit perfectly.
MR –
Flue size 7.5 inches so had to buy10 inch chimney sheep. Pushed it up & pulled down. Created a few folds but I just pulled on the fleece on the fold (not at the edge) and the holes closed up. So very pleased as both bedroom and living room are now far warmer. Can still hear the pigeon calls, but I was never concerned about that. :-) One thing if you have a dog I suggest you open it when they are not around – we have two and they were extremely interested in it, trying to jump up and bite it and barking at it – obviously they could smell the sheep. LOL However they weren’t interested once it was up the chimney so the smell must be quite localised.
David –
a little bit femer could be made stronger but does it,s job
Belinda L –
Much better than a chimney balloon, as they deflate and don’t fit. I have a fireplace 16inches wide (at the front widest part), and approx 12 inches at the back. I bought the 10inch diameter draught excluder, which pushes easily up into the chimney through the narrow opening above where the fire goes, then it sits just up the flue.
It’s brilliant no more cold draughts, and no loss of heating up the chimney. The room is noticeably warmer, then when I want to light the fire it easily pulls out of the flue – just be careful as soot and small debris does collect above it, and can scatter when you pull it out – however because of its thick felt nature, most of the debris settles on the top and doesn’t fall off. I then just stand it in a vase beside the fire equipment when not in use. The black handle is just the right length so that your hands don’t get dirty, and you can see it so don’t forget that it’s there and light a fire! This is a fantastic item and must pay for itself in saving on the heating bills alone!
