Description

How does a Chimney Sheep® draught excluder work?

A Chimney Sheep®  draught excluder is made from highly durable and naturally breathable Herdwick wool, from a Herdwick sheep. The wool is treated with a unique ionic protect plasma which makes it 100% moth proof and aids with the longevity of the Chimney Sheep® (we have customers that have had the same ones for nearly 10 years!). It is then felted to create a unique flexible yet sturdy material. This makes the Chimney Sheep® perfect to plug the gap just above a fireplace.

The woollen pad of the Chimney Sheep® compresses to fit perfectly flues of all shapes and sizes making it far more efficient than any other chimney draught excluder on the market.  Inflatable chimney blockers and chimney umbrellas require a small gap to be left in your flue to allow ventilation but because wool is naturally breathable, a Chimney Sheep® doesn’t require that gap. Instead, once inserted into your chimney flue the 4.43 tog rated Chimney Sheep® acts like a duvet, blocking 95% airflow into and out of your chimney, whilst naturally permitting sufficient ventilation. It works to prevent warm air from escaping up the chimney and stopping cold air from coming in via the chimney when not in use, reducing the ‘stack effect’ phenomenon.

It is as simple as that! Read more about the stack effect and how a Chimney Sheep® works here.

What are the benefits of using a Chimney Sheep® draught excluder?

The list is endless but here are a few of the main benefits:

  • Reduces your energy bills – a Chimney Sheep® stops about 5% of your household heat from escaping, reducing your heating bill £60 per year on average. You can estimate how much your home might save in energy costs by using our savings calculator.
  • Reduces your carbon footprint – a Chimney Sheep® makes your heating more efficient, reducing your CO2 output by up to 250kg per year.
  • No more wind noise – say goodbye to those horrendous howling winds coming through your chimney by plugging it with a Chimney Sheep® (you can turn your TV volume back down now…).
  • Stops wildlife and debris falling in – no more surprises in the hearth, a Chimney Sheep® will catch it all and stop your curious cat getting stuck up the chimney too!
  • Works in the summer – a Chimney Sheep® prevents hot air from entering your home and retains air-conditioned air, keeping your house cool in the summer.
  • Reduces air pollution in the home – a Chimney Sheep® reduces the number of air changes in a property so considerably reduces the amount of air pollution that enters the home.

Does a Chimney Sheep® REALLY work?

It really does! Don’t take our word for it, here is all the evidence:

  • We are the only chimney draught excluder to have a BBA Agrément Certificate. The achieve this the Chimney Sheep® had to go through numerous laboratory tests, on-site evaluations, quality management checks and product inspections, over several years, passing all the assessments to gain the award. The BBA is a worldwide credible industry body and the certificate means that Chimney Sheep® are recognised by building control, government departments, specifiers, and insurers as meeting the BBA’s standards of quality, safety and reliability. It provides you and them with reassurance of the product’s fitness for purpose.
  • Rigorously tested by BSRIA and University of Liverpool which showed that a Chimney Sheep® will stop around 5% of household heat from escaping and therefore save users around £60 off the heating bill per year, per chimney and up to 250kg of CO2 per year chimney, working to reduce energy bills going into winter.
  • Hailed as one of Grand Designs host, Kevin McCloud’s ‘Green Heroes’.
  • DIY Doctor 5* review – read the full review, here.
  • Chimney Sheep® has been featured in the press quite a bit too, from the likes of The Guardian, The Times, Good Housekeeping and Ideal Home. You can have a look at some of the latest articles we’ve been featured in here.

Are Chimney Sheep® sustainably made?

Absolutely. We are really passionate about the environment and sustainability. Everything from our sourcing of wool to our packaging is chosen with the environment in mind and the aim of our reducing our carbon footprint as much as we can.

All Chimney Sheep® are made here in our factory in Maryport, Cumbria, using Herdwick wool sustainably sourced from farmers around Cumbria. We collect the wool once a year which we call our ‘Operation Wool’ project. We pay the local farmers a fair price for this which is usually more than the market price and helps to support them.

The felt head of a Chimney Sheep® usually lasts about 10 years and is 100% wool which means it is completely biodegradable and compostable. The handles are made with recyclable plastic therefore are extremely durable and designed to last for decades. We have designed them so that when the felt head does wear out, you can just replace it with a new felt head and keep the same handle to reduce waste and the use of excess plastic. When the time comes and you have to say goodbye to your felt head, get in touch with us.

By using a Chimney Sheep® you are doing your bit to reduce your carbon footprint and we are really passionate about helping you to reduce your CO2 output even further. That is why we have set up our very own Community Interest Company, Buy Land Plant Trees, so that with each purchase a proportion of the profits will go towards planting trees on agriculturally poor land. 1. Mrs Anderson

    Seems to be working

My chimney is a bit of an awkward shape and I decided to buy an rectangular sheep to stop the draughts.
It’s a bit too early to tell if the room is warmer but it has blocked out the noise of the wind howling down the chimney.

  2. Tony Lawrence

    Excellent Product

What a fantastic product. I purchased this within the past couple of weeks and what a difference it has made.
Within minutes I could feel the difference, no more draughts and the heat contained within the room was also noticeable.
Thank you all at Chimney Sheep and a huge thank you to the sheep.

    Kind regards

    Tony

  3. Anthony McAlister

    Excellent Product

Great choice of products. The chimney sheep was easy to assemble and install. It is definitely a lot warmer in the room & would highly recommend this product for draught proofing a chimney. Great delivery service.

  4. Jonathan Merritt

    So quick to install

We ordered x2 and they arrived really quickly.
Very easy to install and effective.
Very pleased to support a creative UK business.
Would I recommend them – yes for sure!

  5. P Foster

    Effective

I was surprised and pleased to find out what an instantly noticeable difference the chimney sheep has made to the draughts and temperature in our kitchen. I was expecting to have to wait and study my heating bills to feel fully satisfied about installing a draught exclusion that I clearly should have installed years ago.

  6. Norma pech

This is my second chimney sheep and delighted with the product. The room seems warmer and it stops the wind whistling in the chimney. Highly recommend

  7. Janet Baine

    Very happy

I received my Chimney Sheep speedily and well wrapped. I put it in place easily and my flat seems warmer now. I am very pleased that I have been able to buy something that really tackles the problem: previously I had made a large cushion to place in front of the fireplace but this deals with draughts much more effectively. And I hope it helps British farmers, whom we appreciate.

  8. William Mortimer

Fine and fitted - now let's see

The sheep’s wool chimney is robust and exactly what it claimed to be.
The pictures provided on how to fit the product were a bit confusing versus the actual fit I have completed. Our property is 140 years old so maybe the chimney constructions were a bit different then. I have settled the product (2 by 1.5 feet dimension) on the wide ledges about one foot above the fireplace. The single rod to provide a reminder of the product’s presence hangs neatly about three inches below the aperture of the fireplace.
So now we await the next big winds to see if the product stays in place and delivers on our expectation of a cosy lounge without having to close and seal the doorway.

I assume I will have to undertake occasional maintenance to remove the debris that falls down the chimney in high winds or when our neighbours have building works . What are Chimney Sheep’s recommendations?

    • Sally Phillips

We recommend taking the ‘Sheep out around once a year if the chimney is never used – just shake off any debris that may have accumulated and pop it back in.

  9. James Charles Kilcawley

    Chimney sheep

I have purchased three so far and this will be my fourth for a parent’s house. Simple to install. Follow advice and get the sheep a couple of inches longer and wider than the chimney space to ensure a snug fit.

  10. Lia

    Brilliant

Second chimney sheep I’ve bought after moving and flue size changing. I’ve raved to all my friends about it since buying first one, made my house from a draughty wind tunnel to a cosey snug place. So happy with it :))

  11. tracey boyne

    What a difference

Moved into an old property in April. Have noticed a whistling when it’s windy from the 2 chimneys downstairs. Fitted a chimney sheep in both of them and its made a difference right away. Certainly feels a lot warmer already. Well with the money and very happy customers.

  12. Helen

    Super cosy!

Excellent product we could feel the extra heat in the lounge instantly! Very well priced, easy to fit we even bought a storage bag and buzzy bee dangle which is sweet.
Customer service was excellent they helped us choose the correct size. Would highly recommend I’m so glad we found this company

  13. Diana Neads

  14. D Childs

  15. Tracy Thom

This is the second chimney sheep we have ordered it is an excellent product

  16. Jane

    Great idea

My first one was too big, but I’d tried in its bag so no probs about exchanging for the right size. This fits snuggly & I plan to leave in long-term as have no need to use the fireplace. Love the fact it’s sheep’s wool & breathable so I won’t get condensation in the chimney.

  17. John Miller

    Very Clever Product

Really pleased with mine. Very flexible and easy to install and great to use a natural product.

  18. Cambridge Lady

    Converted

I was a little doubtful that this would work stopping the draughts up our chimney but actually, it really has been a lifesaver. Just make sure you get the size right. Now…..how can I get roosting jackdaws to depart my chimney?

  19. Kindle Customer

    Very pleased

I previously bought the balloon ehi h kept deflating and coming down along with a load of soot .. so I put my hand in my pocket and forked out 50 quid for this item… I’ve not once had to reposition it . I popped it up the chimney and there it’s stayed all winter. No drafts , great item does what it states I’m very happy with this item … highly recommend just make sure measurements are right .

  20. Lynda

    It's brilliant!!!!

It is brilliant and has made our room SO much warmer BUT….. you get covered in soot putting it up the chimney!!!!!
Small price to pay for the comfort it has brought.

  21. Amazon Customer

    Since fitting Lounge seems warmer.

Pricey for what it is but hopefully will see cost saving with the heating bill. Already notice the lounge seems warmer.

  22. J1234

It is ok does not fit or block chimney as ...

It is ok does not fit or block chimney as well as I would have hoped but as it is only to stop drafts it will do

  23. Inge

Fantastic and more effective than plastic balloons

Great product check size of your chimney breast so is big enough to cover all the edges. have bought 5 so far great.

  24. Val Robson

Stopped the noise and draughts we were getting whenever it was windy outside. I'm sure the heating bill will be less too.

I ordered this Dec 23rd with standard (free) postage and it came the next day – a Sunday and Christmas Eve. That was VERY impressive, I needed a 14″ by 18″ but this was the nearest size that would work. I’ve folded one side up and it’s fitted well in my chimney. I’m sure it’s helped with the heating bill and cutting down on draughts.

  25. Joe

    Keeps heat in

Since installing chimney sheep in my chimneys I have noticed less draft and wind noise, as well as taking less time for rooms to heat up. I live in a Victorian house so with cast iron fireplaces it is hard to insulate and keep cold air out. With these it keeps the aesthetic of the cast iron fireplace, without the cold drafts.

  26. dusty99

    Does the job.

Bought two for two chimney flues. One was easy to install as the flue opening was regular but the other took some work as the flue opening was full of holes and jags. They have successfully stopped all chimney draughts and the noise of the pigeons on the roof! Glad we chose these instead of balloons

  27. diy man

Chimney sheep, breathable draught for chimneys.

We have a big Victorian chimney and the draught was awful, chimney sheep fills the chimney without cutting off ventilation and the draught has gone. Excellent product.

  28. The Bath Book Worm

    Fantastic

This is simply amazing. It completely stops any heat loss up the chimney, and it’s made from Herdwick sheep wool. Every house with an open fire should have one.

  29. Ron Tenterhooks

    It works

Shoved it up the chimney and the draft was reduced to a minimum.

  30. Demon Bowler

    Excellent Product

since fitted no problems at all with chimney or electric fire which kept cutting out due to air flowing up chimney.

easily installed , one of the best and most practical things I have bought .

  31. Sarah G

    Easy to install, already warmer

This was incredibly easy to install and have already noticed that the room is warmer!

  32. Montse Rincon

Very easy to put up and it works

Great piece of equipment to stop the draft coming in and the heat going out

    Chimney Sheep® Chimney Draught Excluder - Oblong 14" x 24" (36cm x 61cm)
  33. tony southam – andrea hargreaves

    top quality

a bit pricey but brilliant product – a lot better than the air bag version from wicked / B&Q

  34. Wendy

Easy to install seems to be just the trick.

Only just received and installed but it seems to be the very thing. Easy to assemble and install. It is definitely quieter in the room from the outside noise and the wind howling over the chimney
