How does a Chimney Sheep® draught excluder work?

A Chimney Sheep®  draught excluder is made from highly durable and naturally breathable Herdwick wool, from a Herdwick sheep. The wool is treated with a unique ionic protect plasma which makes it 100% moth proof and aids with the longevity of the Chimney Sheep® (we have customers that have had the same ones for nearly 10 years!). It is then felted to create a unique flexible yet sturdy material. This makes the Chimney Sheep® perfect to plug the gap just above a fireplace.

The woollen pad of the Chimney Sheep® compresses to fit perfectly flues of all shapes and sizes making it far more efficient than any other chimney draught excluder on the market.  Inflatable chimney blockers and chimney umbrellas require a small gap to be left in your flue to allow ventilation but because wool is naturally breathable, a Chimney Sheep® doesn’t require that gap. Instead, once inserted into your chimney flue the 4.43 tog rated Chimney Sheep® acts like a duvet, blocking 95% airflow into and out of your chimney, whilst naturally permitting sufficient ventilation. It works to prevent warm air from escaping up the chimney and stopping cold air from coming in via the chimney when not in use, reducing the ‘stack effect’ phenomenon.

It is as simple as that! Read more about the stack effect and how a Chimney Sheep® works here.

What are the benefits of using a Chimney Sheep® draught excluder?

The list is endless but here are a few of the main benefits:

  • Reduces your energy bills – a Chimney Sheep® stops about 5% of your household heat from escaping, reducing your heating bill by about £99 per year on average. You can estimate how much your home might save in energy costs by using our savings calculator.
  • Reduces your carbon footprint – a Chimney Sheep® makes your heating more efficient, reducing your CO2 output by up to 250kg per year.
  • No more wind noise – say goodbye to those horrendous howling winds coming through your chimney by plugging it with a Chimney Sheep® (you can turn your TV volume back down now…).
  • Stops wildlife and debris falling in – no more surprises in the hearth, a Chimney Sheep® will catch it all and stop your curious cat getting stuck up the chimney too!
  • Works in the summer – a Chimney Sheep® prevents hot air from entering your home and retains air-conditioned air, keeping your house cool in the summer.
  • Reduces air pollution in the home – a Chimney Sheep® reduces the number of air changes in a property so considerably reduces the amount of air pollution that enters the home.

Does a Chimney Sheep® REALLY work?

It really does! Don’t take our word for it, here is all the evidence:

  • We are the only chimney draught excluder to have a BBA Agrément Certificate. The achieve this the Chimney Sheep® had to go through numerous laboratory tests, on-site evaluations, quality management checks and product inspections, over several years, passing all the assessments to gain the award. The BBA is a worldwide credible industry body and the certificate means that Chimney Sheep® are recognised by building control, government departments, specifiers, and insurers as meeting the BBA’s standards of quality, safety and reliability. It provides you and them with reassurance of the product’s fitness for purpose.
  • Rigorously tested by BSRIA and University of Liverpool which showed that a Chimney Sheep® will stop around 5% of household heat from escaping and therefore save users around £99 off the heating bill per year, per chimney and up to 250kg of CO2 per year chimney, working to reduce energy bills going into winter.
  • Hailed as one of Grand Designs host, Kevin McCloud’s ‘Green Heroes’.
  • DIY Doctor 5* review – read the full review, here.
  • Chimney Sheep® has been featured in the press quite a bit too, from the likes of The Guardian, The Times, Good Housekeeping and Ideal Home. You can have a look at some of the latest articles we’ve been featured in here.

Are Chimney Sheep® sustainably made?

Absolutely. We are really passionate about the environment and sustainability. Everything from our sourcing of wool to our packaging is chosen with the environment in mind and the aim of our reducing our carbon footprint as much as we can.

All Chimney Sheep® are made here in our factory in Maryport, Cumbria, using Herdwick wool sustainably sourced from farmers around Cumbria. We collect the wool once a year which we call our ‘Operation Wool’ project. We pay the local farmers a fair price for this which is usually more than the market price and helps to support them.

The felt head of a Chimney Sheep® usually lasts about 10 years and is 100% wool which means it is completely biodegradable and compostable. The handles are made with recyclable plastic therefore are extremely durable and designed to last for decades. We have designed them so that when the felt head does wear out, you can just replace it with a new felt head and keep the same handle to reduce waste and the use of excess plastic. When the time comes and you have to say goodbye to your felt head, get in touch with us.

By using a Chimney Sheep® you are doing your bit to reduce your carbon footprint and we are really passionate about helping you to reduce your CO2 output even further. That is why we have set up our very own Community Interest Company, Buy Land Plant Trees, so that with each purchase a proportion of the profits will go towards planting trees on agriculturally poor land. How do I work out what size of Chimney Sheep® I need?

All you need to do is measure your chimney. We promise, it sounds more complicated than it really is! Head over to our simple instructions which walk you through it. If you do have any trouble though, just get in touch and we can help.

Our standard Chimney Sheep sizes will fit the majority of chimney flues. However, each and every chimney (like us!) is unique so if your chimney doesn’t look like it will fit one of our standard sizes, contact us with the measurements and we will give you a quote for a made-to-measure Chimney Sheep® that will fit your chimney perfectly.

  1. Stuart Higley

    Just the job!

The front room in our new house was cold and draughty and our chimney sweep told us of the Chimney Sheep product. I duly bought one and can’t stress how delighted I am. The results have been unbelievable. Added to that the Company was a delight to deal with. Thank you for all your help.

  2. Nick Reed

Should have done it years ago.

Advised years ago that a ‘chimney balloon’ was the only thing I could add to improve the energy efficiency of our home.
Finally got to hear about Chimney Sheep through Octopus Energy and thought ”what a great idea.’
Fiddly to fit in our chimney but instructions were good and took longer than I had anticipated.
Whether psychological, but within 24hrs the room felt warmer and we felt smug and much better about ourselves and the environment.
    Great product.

  3. Chris Stride

So far so good. Product arrived on time. It looked robust and well-made. Was relatively easy to fit. It seems to cut out drafts, but it is early days. Let’s see how it performs longer term. The indications so far are good.

  4. Deb Bain

    Sheep farmer approved!

As a wool grower in Australia, and an owner of a few thousand sheep, we were excited to add three more “Sheep” to our herd. We have an old Victorian house with big chimneys, each of different size, and none perfectly symmetrical. We ordered the sheep a little on the bigger side to allow for this variance. They are fantastic- for us it has been less about energy saving, and more about minimising ingress from the local flora and fauna and so far- a few weeks in- we have success! No dust or flies!
The sheeps fit very well, but are located quite high up the chimney (mustn’t forget to remove before lighting a fire in winter😳-reminder to self to create longer tags!) so my first one was a battle with soot and rubbish falling on me and in my eye as I tried to place it above my head height- but then I got clever and realised they make a great umbrella if you put it above your head first before standing up in the fireplace! Will let you know how they go if a possum falls down the chimney!
In the meantime, could you please advise if Father Christmas need us to remove the Sheep in order for him to provide his services? Perhaps his OHS training has provided him with “Chimney Sheep” certification??? Or maybe he has a Chimney Elf to assist him!?😂

Merry Christmas, and thanks for a great product used from one of the best fibres in the world- Wool!

  5. bet tickner

Coldest , shortest day of the year

Took a while to fit it in my chimney, but very happy to have no draughts and heat loss.

  6. J Smith

    Does exactly what it says

Having finally managed to get around to putting it up our chimney, it works, the gale force wind that used to whistle past me and up the chimney has ceased exist. Should of had one years ago

  7. Zak Shayler

Good product and does exactly what it is meant to do

Saw this mentioned on Money Saving Expert website and keen to stop draught from chimney. Agreed that some may see it as expensive and yes there probably other ways to stop the issue but this is a great, sustainable product so would not hesitate to recommend. Works perfectly, quick delivery.

  8. Dave Gibbs

A tricky fit in our chimney with its rebuilt brickwork surround and fire hole, but got there eventually. A great success with all draughts eliminated.

  9. Alison Thorrington

Great product but wrong size despite following advice

This is undoubtably a great product. I followed all the instructions for measurements, double checked at least twice then went to order. I then came across the size guide chart and changed my order to the next size. Unfortunately this rather too big and folds and creases when inserted. Not sure if I must have measured incorrectly or the size parameters were a bit too generous.
It does seem to still work after pulling and pushing and arranging a lot.
I assumed that I couldn’t return it once tried as it obviously was a bit sooty.

  10. Caroline Hooper

    Problem solved - we hope!

Delighted with the product. We have spent thousands on trying to sort out water dripping down our big chimney, despite it being capped. This sorts the problem from the bottom rather than the top & hopefully will catch any drips & they should evaporate away.

  11. Stewart

    Money well spent

Bought three in different sizes for our old Edwardian house where you could previously feel the draft coming down the chimneys. Having installed these, the draft is gone and already (in Autumn) the rooms feel more cosy. Such a good idea, I full recommend these.

  12. Mark Wood.

    Ewe Better Believe It.

Just got a Chimney 🐑 after having an old living flame gas fire removed. The difference is amazing. A lot quieter in the room, and no bits falling into the hearth. As previously stated in other reviews, be prepared for some soot and dirt to fall when fitting. A little too early to see how much we will save over winter, but I think we will be a lot cosier either way. Excellent product.

  13. AJ

    Really great for unused chimney

We have an open fireplace in a bedroom, and I’m really pleased that we’re able to fill the space with something that won’t contribute to damp. I’m also delighted that these are thoroughly moth-proofed. Very easy to use, and excellent for keeping bits of soot and dirt from falling into the hearth.

  14. Tracy Thom

This is the 3rd chimney sheep we have purchased but the first one of this size, it fits perfectly into the chimney opening and we are hoping it has blocked out the light as the chimney space is not used and we have a problem with birds nesting and the small fledglings following the light down into the room. I am hoping that with the light source covered by the chimney sheep that the fledglings will stay in the nest and exit the property back through the same space as the parent birds. I know it is a bit unusual but with such an innovative product it is worth a try.

  15. Dave

    Happy Cats

We seem to have HUGE chimneys despite modest size fireplaces. It took a bit of jiggling but the sheep are up the chimney (I may well go back and order some extender rods, more for comfort rather than necessity) Our front room is immediately warmer, so much so that the the cats curled up on the settee in the evening which is unheard of unless the fire is on. I’m optimistic that these will make an even bigger difference in winter.
Worth it bargain that I wish we had found out about them sooner!

  16. Polly Haile

    Great product

Easy to install despite having measured our chimney a bit wrong, brilliant product, ace service and solved our issue instantly! Really recommend!

  17. DebsH

    No down draft.

Effective draft control for unused chimney

  18. Jason R

Does exactly what you need from it

It really does feel like a sheep, lol! It’s warm and easy to fit with the handles provided. Worth buying for the winter months, if you have an open disused chimney. Word to the wise tho, make sure the excluder is bigger than chimney place you are trying to cover by an inch or so! Highly recommended

  19. Lee S

    Expensive for what it is

It works as advertised. but I think overpriced for what it is.. Probably wouldn’t buy again

  20. Mrs H Stevens

Absolutely brilliant, I noticed the difference straight away - no ...

Absolutely brilliant, I noticed the difference straight away – no more drafty chimney when the fire not lit. Excellent product and much much better than the fiddley chimney balloons.

  21. Hare

    OK but not great

I have a weird shaped chimney and it took several days of moving it about to get it to fit. Even then it’s not ideal but it does stop the majority of chimney chills.

  22. Jifsome

    Be gone, o draughty fireplace.....

Our local Chimney Sweep recently recommended a Chimney Sheep, as we have rather a large fireplace, which we only use occasionally. And what a difference it has made! The room is now free from draughts, and is much quieter and significantly warmer. The product appears well made, is marketed superbly, whilst managing to support the UK’s wool industry. As a solution to a problem, it rates 5 stars, however my only gripe is the overall quality of the handle(s). They can feel a little flimsy, and when the extension poles are used, seem a tad spindly for our larger sized Sheep. Also, once the Sheep is firmly wedged in position, they can protrude at odd angles. A hinged attachment would solve this – allowing the handle to dangle freely, regardless of the angle of the inserted Sheep….. Would I still recommend this product? Yes, absolutely! I just feel that at this pricing point, there is room for a design improvement to get that 5th star.

  23. Dos

Great at stopping drafts from the chimney.

These chimney sheep are great, they are well made and have stopped the drafts in our home. One thing I would say is; measure your chimney openings carefully and be prepared for some soot and dirt to come down on you, as I found fitting these up the chimney a little tricky, especially within the openings we have. However, they were/are well worth that little bit of hassle.

  24. J. Armstrong

Get the sizing right or oversize if necessary

The second one I have bought. Reduces wind noise and prevents fall of dust – a good product.

  25. PJK

    Works as promised

The best money I spent this year. I have a wide chimney that used to be drafty and this does exactly what it promises. It would be nice if it came with some sort of container to put it in when using the fire, as it inevitably gets covered in soot. Its really good though.

  26. MARK

    Def warmer lounge

Seems to have made our Lounge a lot less drafty and house stays warmer, seem expensive but i think they will recoup as our heating seems more consistent and we had a huge opening on a modern Gas coal fire. Some recent sub zero weather was a good test. Easy to fit and make sure you buy a bit larger than the opening as its easy to adjust when pushing it home. Sensible hanging tags as well to remind everyone not to light the fire.

  27. Bumble

    Draughts and noise reduction down.

This has made such a different to a) draughts, soot and insects as fits really snuggly up the flue and keeps the wind chill out b) noise is dramatically reduced (living near to a main road and wind noises down the chimney) and really makes a difference and the room feels warm in the morning unlike the chill feeling there was before. I like that it is of natural material and breathable as living in an old building, ventilation is important.

  28. Mrs Bouqet

Have looked at these for years, this winter decided to use one in my morning room chimney, wow what a difference, even in the bad windy weather we have just had it had been a god send. Wish we had got one years ago!

  29. Sean

Good quality and highly recommended if you have significant draught

This size chimney sheep really is huge. We have a large fireplace with an odd flue, so instead of blocking the flue we use this to block the whole fireplace roof. We had to cut it to size which requires some strong scissors as the material is thick. The quality looks good and performs well. There is a wool smell when you first open but it does dissipate after some time. Although the size of this sheep is quite expensive, the difference is noticable and hopefully you can make some heating savings by using this.

After purchase I noticed you can get custom sizes cut directly through their website for no extra cost which would have been ideal for us but it cutting ourselves was not a huge issue.

  30. Caroline C

    It works!

Excellent product. It is so easy to use and it completely stopped the draught that was coming down my chimney. Highly recommended and very good quality.

  31. Elly542

Very easy to fit as the instructions say - and do ...

Very easy to fit as the instructions say – and do the job really well. So far no issues with condensation/damp although it hasn’t been in place long or over a winter.

  32. shopper2

    Five Stars

Very useful keeping draughts from chimney great product

  33. Mustard Seed

    Cosy bathroom

Easy to install and has made our bathroom much less cold as a result.

  34. Halina Bien

    Four Stars

Excellent product does the job it was meant to do.

  35. EPB

    Super chimney draft excluder

This is a super product. Do buy larger than chimney size as that extra size holds it firmly in place. Cuts all drafts. Amazon delivered it in a huge box!!!

  36. Sean A

    Stop draughts and save money

For anyone with a chimney this is fantastic. Cuts down draughts hugely and saves energy. Easy to fit and remove when a fire is wanted. Wish I had had one for the last 20 years!!!
