Description

How does a Chimney Sheep® draught excluder work?

A Chimney Sheep®  draught excluder is made from highly durable and naturally breathable Herdwick wool, from a Herdwick sheep. The wool is treated with a unique ionic protect plasma which makes it 100% moth proof and aids with the longevity of the Chimney Sheep® (we have customers that have had the same ones for nearly 10 years!). It is then felted to create a unique flexible yet sturdy material. This makes the Chimney Sheep® perfect to plug the gap just above a fireplace.

The woollen pad of the Chimney Sheep® compresses to fit perfectly flues of all shapes and sizes making it far more efficient than any other chimney draught excluder on the market.  Inflatable chimney blockers and chimney umbrellas require a small gap to be left in your flue to allow ventilation but because wool is naturally breathable, a Chimney Sheep® doesn’t require that gap. Instead, once inserted into your chimney flue the 4.43 tog rated Chimney Sheep® acts like a duvet, blocking 95% airflow into and out of your chimney, whilst naturally permitting sufficient ventilation. It works to prevent warm air from escaping up the chimney and stopping cold air from coming in via the chimney when not in use, reducing the ‘stack effect’ phenomenon.

It is as simple as that! Read more about the stack effect and how a Chimney Sheep® works here.

What are the benefits of using a Chimney Sheep® draught excluder?

The list is endless but here are a few of the main benefits:

  • Reduces your energy bills – a Chimney Sheep® stops about 5% of your household heat from escaping, reducing your heating bill by about £60 per year on average. You can estimate how much your home might save in energy costs by using our savings calculator.
  • Reduces your carbon footprint – a Chimney Sheep® makes your heating more efficient, reducing your CO2 output by up to 250kg per year.
  • No more wind noise – say goodbye to those horrendous howling winds coming through your chimney by plugging it with a Chimney Sheep® (you can turn your TV volume back down now…).
  • Stops wildlife and debris falling in – no more surprises in the hearth, a Chimney Sheep® will catch it all and stop your curious cat from getting stuck up the chimney too!
  • Works in the summer – a Chimney Sheep® prevents hot air from entering your home and retains air-conditioned air, keeping your house cool in the summer.
  • Reduces air pollution in the home – a Chimney Sheep® reduces the number of air changes in a property so considerably reduces the amount of air pollution that enters the home.

Does a Chimney Sheep® REALLY work?

It really does! Don’t take our word for it, here is all the evidence:

  • We are the only chimney draught excluder to have a BBA Agrément Certificate. The achieve this the Chimney Sheep® had to go through numerous laboratory tests, on-site evaluations, quality management checks and product inspections, over several years, passing all the assessments to gain the award. The BBA is a worldwide credible industry body and the certificate means that Chimney Sheep® are recognised by building control, government departments, specifiers, and insurers as meeting the BBA’s standards of quality, safety and reliability. It provides you and them with reassurance of the product’s fitness for purpose.
  • Rigorously tested by BSRIA and University of Liverpool which showed that a Chimney Sheep® will stop around 5% of household heat from escaping and therefore save users around £60 off the heating bill per year, per chimney and up to 250kg of CO2 per year chimney, working to reduce energy bills going into winter.
  • Hailed as one of Grand Designs host, Kevin McCloud’s ‘Green Heroes’.
  • DIY Doctor 5* review – read the full review, here.
  • Chimney Sheep® has been featured in the press quite a bit too, from the likes of The Guardian, The Times, Good Housekeeping and Ideal Home. You can have a look at some of the latest articles we’ve been featured in here.

Are Chimney Sheep® sustainably made?

Absolutely. We are really passionate about the environment and sustainability. Everything from our sourcing of wool to our packaging is chosen with the environment in mind and the aim of our reducing our carbon footprint as much as we can.

All Chimney Sheep® are made here in our factory in Maryport, Cumbria, using Herdwick wool sustainably sourced from farmers around Cumbria. We collect the wool once a year which we call our ‘Operation Wool’ project. We pay the local farmers a fair price for this which is usually more than the market price and helps to support them.

The felt head of a Chimney Sheep® usually lasts about 10 years and is 100% wool which means it is completely biodegradable and compostable. The handles are made with recyclable plastic therefore are extremely durable and designed to last for decades. We have designed them so that when the felt head does wear out, you can just replace it with a new felt head and keep the same handle to reduce waste and the use of excess plastic. When the time comes and you have to say goodbye to your felt head, get in touch with us.

By using a Chimney Sheep® you are doing your bit to reduce your carbon footprint and we are really passionate about helping you to reduce your CO2 output even further. That is why we have set up our very own Community Interest Company, Buy Land Plant Trees, so that with each purchase a proportion of the profits will go towards planting trees on agriculturally poor land. 1. IRENE

    Great product

Excellent product, good quality & stops chimney draughts.

  2. David N Thomas

    Yes it works

After a bad winter its still in place and stopping draughts. Wish I had installed it earlier.

  3. Sue

Reasonable draughts excluder should save a bit of money.

Good at minimising down draughts some noise still but you can’t have everything!

  4. pip

    simple to use

Arrived quickly. Easy to use. Muffles wind noise. We live in an old 3 storey house opposite a field and after having a chimney liner installed, the wind noise can be very loud. I would like it to be thicker to provide more noise protection.

  5. Doremifaso

    Does the job nicely!

When we moved into our house, the gas fireplace wasn’t used and the pipes had all been cut off leaving just a gaping hole.
This product solved our problem of finding something simple that we can just shove up the chimney to block off any wind that comes down it making those horrible howling noises and also to stop central heating from escaping up the chimney too.
Its been up there for well over a year now and doesn’t seem to have fallen back down or anything so all is good.

  6. DJ FERRARI

Great item, buy the right size!

Does what it says, blocks our draughty chimney.
Ingenious product for a simple problem.
    Easy to install and remove.
make sure you get the right size, I cannot stress this enough! Too big and it’ll be difficult to use, too small and it’ll fall out.

  7. PO’F

    Better than a balloon

Much easier to install than a balloon

  8. ronald lyall

    Three Stars

    A good product

  9. Bobbi 23

Stops the draft from your chimney

Wish I had discovered years ago, this chimney sheep, now in my chimney has stopped the draft coming into my livingroom, such a simple device but works a treat, well made, easy to install, arrived quickly. Would recommend .

  10. PaulJ

Perfect for Blocking up a Chimney

Wasn’t sure about stuffing a sheep up my chimney but it certainly seems to work. We had removed an oil range and the flue was not needed but needed venting so had to block it with something that would stop stuff falling down and stop wind noise. On both counts complete success.

  11. George Larmon

Good for heat, not for blocking noise (traffic)

Product is great for pure heat saving. I wanted it to be a bit more of a blocker for sound as well. I stuffed a pillow up there to block sound and it worked better than this. But I suppose does what it’s suppose to do. I probably should have got a larger diameter. Ensure you measure your hole and get a sheep about 2 inches bigger

  12. Amazon Customer

    Fits but not tight

8in just about fits 8inch round flue, not very tight, could even fall out over time if it got wet from rain coming down chimney, needs to 1inch bigger to ensure a good snug fit

  13. Bobbyboy

Excellent and easy solution for draughts.

This is very thick and while it is larger than the diameter of the flue I was putting it in it is sufficiently flexible and well made to seal the flue without modification. The removeable “pusher” that is used to insert it into the chimney is a very good idea as it means that the chimney sheep cannot be seen once the pusher is removed. It also comes with a safety notice to put near the chimney to warn people not to light a fire until it has been removed. Recommended.

  14. kanakis Argyris

    Good but wrong measures

Good idea but the recommended measures does not feet. Buy a little bigger from their recommendations. If you have the correct size it is doing the job very well.

  15. David Gambold

    Stops cold downdraughts

Easy to use , very effective

  16. Starry night

Practical, simple solution to draughts and heat loss

I’ve seen sheep’s wool used as insulation in eco build homes before, but its use as a chimney draught excluder was a new one on me. The idea seemed preferable to an inflatable plastic chimney pillow. This was so easy to install – just attach the handle (with or without an extension section) and push it up into the flue. The 8″ round version was perfect for our circular 6″ flue. Down draughts and heat loss via the chimney instantly reduced – indeed, no draught at all is noticeable with this in place.

I’m not remotely convinced by the claim that these stop debris, wildlife and insects falling in – this might prevent them from landing in your room when they do first fall, but since the chimney sheep is fitted at the bottom of the flue it does nothing to stop things from falling down the chimney itself or coming out into the room when the chimney sheep is eventually removed. But I’d thought that through before buying. The only real disappointment I have with this was that it was wrapped in a plastic bag, and the handle is made from plastic – the use of plastic seeming like a less good choice in an eco product.

  17. Trisandtash

    Best for the job

Brilliant product, I love the concept of this, and how the company has utilised its local resources. It’s breathable so no chimney damp, it’s drys naturally if rain gets down the chimney and the sound and heat difference is amazing. Top notch many thanks. Highly recommended.

  18. Renata

Five Stars - modified to four after use

Our chimney is just 4.5″ but it fits perfectly. Let’s see how it performs when it is windy…

After some time I can say the chimney sheep does help a bit but don’t expect that it blocks the wind perfectly – it doesn’t. I still hear the wind blowing and some draft is coming out, but it certainly decreased

  19. S. McAlpine

Got to replace a chimney balloon.

Got to replace a chimney balloon. Much prefer this in terms of ease fitting it and general sense of durability

  20. Andrew H

I have had no such issues with this product and is easy to install

Does the job and because it’s breathable prevents condensation within the room. I have heard stories of people getting streaming windows because they decided to use a pillow or cushion stuffed up the chimney, which then got damp and caused the problem. I have had no such issues with this product and is easy to install. It’s not going to be removed because I have an electric fire but would be simple to do so if needed. It certainly has stopped any soot falling into the hearth since installed. A good product and comes with the added advantage that you can tell visitors that you have stuffed a sheep up your chimney!

  21. A. Roberton

    Quality that should Last

Like so many other people, I would normally stuff newspaper up the chimney when no fire was needed. A messy job at the best of times, especially when having to remove all the paper, making sure that I had not missed any. So I thought the time had come to try one of these and I am so glad I did. It fitted easily and has a cord hanging from it that would remind you that it is there, so no forgetting to remove it if you want to use the fire. Best of all, as it is both easy to put in and take out, there is no worry as to whether something has been missed.

This is a quality product designed to do the job perfectly. Highly recommended.

  22. Will Stevens

    Very satisfactory

In line with the instructions on the manufacturer’s web site, I took some trouble to make sure that I was ordering the right item for our chimney, and it’s clear that I made the right choice. Incidentally, instead of peering up the chimney, I used a camera (with flash and macro mode set, of course) and this made the job quite easy. The Chimney Sheep (with an extension rod, which I ordered) went up very easily, and fits snugly.

Of course, it’s something of a luxury item. I’m sure that you could get equally good draught and noise insulation simply by stuffing, say, some old fabric or bubble wrap up the chimney. On the other hand, if you want to use the fireplace sometimes, as we probably shall, the Chimney Sheep is likely to be more convenient.
