We think a Chimney Sheep® is a no brainer! Why? Here are a few reasons:

  • Stops wind noise coming down through the chimney
  • Stops wildlife and debris falling into the hearth
  • Works in the summer to keep your house cool
  • Reduces air pollution entering the home
  • Has industry reassurance as the only chimney draught excluder to hold a BBA certificate
  • Made in the UK at our factory here in Maryport using Herdwick wool collected during our Operation Wool project

How does a Chimney Sheep® draught excluder work?

A Chimney Sheep®  draught excluder is made from highly durable and naturally breathable Herdwick wool, from a Herdwick sheep. The wool is treated with a unique ionic protect plasma which makes it 100% moth proof and aids with the longevity of the Chimney Sheep® (we have customers that have had the same ones for nearly 10 years!). It is then felted to create a unique flexible yet sturdy material. This makes the Chimney Sheep® perfect to plug the gap just above a fireplace.

The woollen pad of the Chimney Sheep® compresses to fit perfectly flues of all shapes and sizes making it far more efficient than any other chimney draught excluder on the market.  Inflatable chimney blockers and chimney umbrellas require a small gap to be left in your flue to allow ventilation but because wool is naturally breathable, a Chimney Sheep® doesn’t require that gap. Instead, once inserted into your chimney flue the 4.43 tog rated Chimney Sheep® acts like a duvet, blocking 95% airflow into and out of your chimney, whilst naturally permitting sufficient ventilation. It works to prevent warm air from escaping up the chimney and stopping cold air from coming in via the chimney when not in use, reducing the ‘stack effect’ phenomenon.

It is as simple as that! Read more about the stack effect and how a Chimney Sheep® works here.

What are the benefits of using a Chimney Sheep® draught excluder?

The list is endless but here are a few of the main benefits:

  • Reduces your energy bills – a Chimney Sheep® stops about 5% of your household heat from escaping, reducing your heating bill by about £99 per year on average. You can estimate how much your home might save in energy costs by using our savings calculator.
  • Reduces your carbon footprint – a Chimney Sheep® makes your heating more efficient, reducing your CO2 output by up to 250kg per year.
  • No more wind noise – say goodbye to those horrendous howling winds coming through your chimney by plugging it with a Chimney Sheep® (you can turn your TV volume back down now…).
  • Stops wildlife and debris falling in – no more surprises in the hearth, a Chimney Sheep® will catch it all and stop your curious cat getting stuck up the chimney too!
  • Works in the summer – a Chimney Sheep® prevents hot air from entering your home and retains air-conditioned air, keeping your house cool in the summer.
  • Reduces air pollution in the home – a Chimney Sheep® reduces the number of air changes in a property so considerably reduces the amount of air pollution that enters the home.

Does a Chimney Sheep® REALLY work?

It really does! Don’t take our word for it, here is all the evidence:

  • We are the only chimney draught excluder to have a BBA Agrément Certificate. The achieve this the Chimney Sheep® had to go through numerous laboratory tests, on-site evaluations, quality management checks and product inspections, over several years, passing all the assessments to gain the award. The BBA is a worldwide credible industry body and the certificate means that Chimney Sheep® are recognised by building control, government departments, specifiers, and insurers as meeting the BBA’s standards of quality, safety and reliability. It provides you and them with reassurance of the product’s fitness for purpose.
  • Rigorously tested by BSRIA and University of Liverpool which showed that a Chimney Sheep® will stop around 5% of household heat from escaping and therefore save users around £99 off heating bills per year, per chimney and up to 250kg of CO2 per year chimney, working to reduce energy bills going into winter.
  • Hailed as one of Grand Designs host, Kevin McCloud’s ‘Green Heroes’.
  • DIY Doctor 5* review – read the full review, here.
  • Chimney Sheep® has been featured in the press quite a bit too, from the likes of The Guardian, The Times, Good Housekeeping and Ideal Home. You can have a look at some of the latest articles we’ve been featured in here.

Are Chimney Sheep® sustainably made?

Absolutely. We are really passionate about the environment and sustainability. Everything from our sourcing of wool to our packaging is chosen with the environment in mind and the aim of our reducing our carbon footprint as much as we can.

All Chimney Sheep® are made here in our factory in Maryport, Cumbria, using Herdwick wool sustainably sourced from farmers around Cumbria. We collect the wool once a year which we call our ‘Operation Wool’ project. We pay the local farmers a fair price for this which is usually more than the market price and helps to support them.

The felt head of a Chimney Sheep® usually lasts about 10 years and is 100% wool which means it is completely biodegradable and compostable. The handles are made with recyclable plastic therefore are extremely durable and designed to last for decades. We have designed them so that when the felt head does wear out, you can just replace it with a new felt head and keep the same handle to reduce waste and the use of excess plastic. When the time comes and you have to say goodbye to your felt head, get in touch with us.

By using a Chimney Sheep® you are doing your bit to reduce your carbon footprint and we are really passionate about helping you to reduce your CO2 output even further. That is why we have set up our very own Community Interest Company, Buy Land Plant Trees, so that with each purchase a proportion of the profits will go towards planting trees on agriculturally poor land. How do I work out what size of Chimney Sheep® I need?

All you need to do is measure your chimney. We promise, it sounds more complicated than it really is! Head over to our simple instructions which walk you through it. If you do have any trouble though, just get in touch and we can help.

Our standard Chimney Sheep sizes will fit the majority of chimney flues. However, each and every chimney (like us!) is unique so if your chimney doesn’t look like it will fit one of our standard sizes, contact us with the measurements and we will give you a quote for a made-to-measure Chimney Sheep® that will fit your chimney perfectly.

  1. Dawn K

    Yes it does work!

Fitted our sheep and no more draughty ankles or debris on the hearth. Very pleased with it.
Think we may buy another for our noisy chimney in our other room.

  2. John

    Simple but effective

Very pleased with my Chimney Sheep. I wasn’t sure which size to order for my narrow oblong chimney opening (41cm x 10cm), but I went for one that is comfortably larger than the opening in both directions (51cm x 20cm) and it’s fine. Basically you are stuffing a dense flexible pad into the opening, so it needs to be big enough to have some ‘grip’ all the way round to stay in place and form a good draughtproof barrier. I’m lucky that the opening is easily accessible, so it’s not difficult to put it in place or remove it. The accompanying “There’s a sheep up your chimney!” card is a nice touch. It’s on the mantelpiece and is the source of some amusement/interest to visitors.
The only downside is that I’m kicking myself that I didn’t order some woollen insoles at the same time to save on postage!

  3. Sue Oliver

    Eco friendly and efficinet

Noticed the difference the very first evening. Didn’t realize just how much downdraft we were getting. Great product, great price and eco friendly….what more could you want? Very happy with purchase

  4. Colin Rowland

I have to admit I was a little skeptical when my wife mentioned the idea of a Chimney Sheep, however I’m really impressed with the way it has cut down on the drafts so dramatically. It is really easy to fit in the chimney. I wish we’d had one sooner.

  5. Jean Burridge

    Chimney Sheep

I originally ordered the wrong size but managed to change it hassle free! I’m very pleased with this product.

  6. Lizzy

Why did I wait so long!!!

Absolutely brilliant! Can’t believe I waited so long to get one of these. I love the fact it’s made from wool. Have noticed a real difference, before you could actually feel there was a draft coming down the chimney! Hopefully now there will also be no more dust falling down too. The size I bought was a fair bit longer than our weird shaped chimney but this didn’t matter at all as it just fits snugly in once you push it up then pull back down slightly.

  7. Nikki Sargento

    Great Idea

We are doing the Octopus challenge and saw these so brought one for our chimney fits great and love the idea that its all made from sheeps wool and hopefully will help with heating costs.

  8. Jenny Fenn

    Great product

Easy to fit. Does the job. What’s not to like.

  9. Susan

Arrived quickly, easy to fit, does the job better than the old cardboard box we had previously. Also supports the Herdwicks, Lake District industries etc.
Make sure you order one large enough, the edges are flexible for a snug fit.

  10. Tim

    Simple and effective

Octopus Energy suggested this as a Tip in their Winter Workout challenge to reduce energy usage. It’s simple to figure out which one you need, delivery was prompt, and installation straight forward. Has definitely removed a significant source of drafts / heat loss in our lounge and we’re therefore expecting it to pay for itself in reduced bills. Thanks for a simple and effective solution! :-)

  11. melanie eaton

    Love it!

Instantly feels a bit warmer in the lounge..we’ve had a cold draughty room for 23 years with our open fireplace, with the door open you could feel the pull of air into the room…but that has all stopped now with our new chimney sheep in place..easy to size up easy to order and very speedy delivery! Thank you guys xx

  12. Douglas Richardson

Does what it says on the tin

An excellent low-tech product that safely stops heat loss via the chimney.

  13. Simon Haven

    What draught?

Absolutely brilliant product, and some excellent use of puns too. Simple to install in the chimney (though I did manage to get a feceful of debris when measuring up) and once in the draught from the chimney was completely gone.

Definitely follow the measuring instructions before buying as the tiny fireplace in our bedroom had a surprisingly large chimney flu.

The sheep really has done the trick on banishing draughts.

  14. J. Rankin

    Chimney sheep

Love my Chimney sweep. Felt difference very quickly. Living room so much warmer, don’t need extra heat. A great product, in fact a genius idea!

  15. GH

Great product – well made. Excellent solution to prevent chimney heat loss

  16. S. Sanders

Purchased this item last week extremely pleased got tbe bigger size and it was easy to install. Now sitting in a room with no draughts at all feels much warmer and wish we had known about it ages ago. Thank you to helpful staff too. Would recommend it to anyone with a draughty chimney. Many thanks

  17. Nicola Rosen

    Easy to Fit

  18. David

    It does the job!

I purchased an oblong chimney sweep, a little longer than recommended, for use in a chimney we use for an occasional fire. On first installation it didn’t fit too well, with openings at the folds in the corners. However, after a few days, it has moulded to the opening and fits well.

Room retains more warmth on a sunny day.

The parcel fitted through our letter box.

  19. Julia Sharman

    Why wouldn’t you?!

Honestly this has to be one of my best purchases ever!!! (and I make a lot of them) who knew that much heat was escaping! It was only when I stuck an A4 sheet of paper on the fireplace with a “welcome home” message for my husband and saw the thing basically being sucked up the chimney with the draft , did I realise how much energy was being wasted. Love the whole concept ….. wouldn’t hesitate to recommend 💖💖

  20. Ann

Great! Easy to fit – does the job, prevents the chimney draught and keeps me cosy.
    Thank you

  21. Roz

    Excellent product

This really works. I wish we had bought one a few years ago. We noticed the difference as soon as it was in place. Would be nice if the handle was wooden to make it plastic free and fully sustainable/biodegradable.

  22. Bethan

I think I bought a size to big, but I have fitted it by pushing in. Has stopped the downdraft fabulously. A really really effective product, much better than the plastic ones I have tried previously. Highly recomended

  23. Joseph Cook

    Works great

Our front room chimney is an awkward shape and this was the closest sheep albeit a bit wide. Had some initial problems fitting it but got there in the end and very happy. As an aside the customer service response (Susan) to my emails was excellent, very helpful and quick to respond.

  24. Andy

I spent ages researching what to get as we’d never needed one before but I’m very pleased I chose this one. So easy to install and stopped all draughts from coming down the chimney keeping the room lovely and warm. Would definitely recommend.

  25. LT

Will save you money on Heating long term.

Absolute fantastic. It was easy to insert in the chimney. We have had quite a few windy evenings and it has definitely stopped any drafts. This will also stop any coal dust coming into the room aswell (even though we have just had the chimney swept) i would definitely advise anyone to purchase this instead of an inflatable.

  26. stephen whatmore

    what a brilliant idea!

This is the most bizarre yet brilliant solution if you have drafts down your chimney. It really does what it says on the package

  27. slatt’s

    Bigger is better.

This is a great idea, really pleased easy to install and it works .Just when ordering to for the next size up to allow for any anomaly that may of accrued when the chimney was built.

  28. lynndelou

Bought this for my husband to use in place of an unattractive cardboard box. He says it wasn’t quite as substantial as he imagined it to be – but it does do the job well and it definitely improves the look of our lounge! Great!

  29. Smudger

    Four Stars

Works, but make sure you have the correct size

  30. Doreen Allen

    Great Buy

Just what I needed to keep draughts from coming down the chimney. As this was making the room cold I needed something like to keep the heat from escaping.

  31. Gerryfox

    Excellent product

I have just received my 8×20 sheep and fitted it to the chimney. I could probably have done with the next size down, but that was my fault. It was therefore a bit of a push to fit it but once in, only took a couple of minutes, it made an immediate effect. The draught from the chimney was gone and so was the noise. Our living room immediately was warmer because the cold air was not coming in and the warm air not escaping. The heating only needed to be on for a short time where yesterday we had to keep it on all evening. Extremely pleased with the product and would recommend it wholeheartedly.

  32. nigel flynn

    Great bit of kit

Great piece of equipment- good seller !

  33. Molly Brown

    Does the job

A practical fraught excluder and eco friendly

  34. Dunomhains

    Amazing product

What a difference this has mane to our living room no drafts or noise from the wind and we’re in Scotland and know about wind I’m absolutely amazed with it don’t hesitate buy it

  35. PB

Does the job preventing draughts in the lounge (white handle perhaps would be better)

Before installing this, I could take a throw and place across the (lounge) door frames entrance and see the draught suck the throw about 50 cm (at the bottom) inwards towards the chimney. Now, with excluder in place, I repeated the experiment and there is little if no draw towards the chimney — Job done. From the above, I expect that this will save me money, and keep the longe warmer but let’s see.

  36. jackyboy

    Warmer room and no damp.

Bought to stop the cold winds whistling down the chimney. Previous owners had put wood block across but this had caused damp on the chimney breast upstairs . So far the sheep works well and no damp! Very pleased!

  37. James

    Works perfectly

I love my chimney sheep! The main reason being the speed at which I can install and remove it without having to inflate anything or getting caked in soot, it’s literally a 10 second job. I suspect there is a trick to getting the perfect size sheep for your chimney as if you get one too large it’s likely to curl up and allow gaps. Ours can do this sometimes but a quick wiggle seems to seal it up.

  38. bobstheword

There is a sheep up our chimney

We’ve already noticed the room warmer since fitting the sheep

  39. P Kitchen

    Works well

Good product, not much more then the chimney ballon i had in there before but which only lasted 1 winter.
Fitted in 2 mins and already making a big difference. Quick delivery

  40. Amazon Customer

    Five Stars

Swift delivery and just the job to help prevent draughts and also stops the cat going the other way!

  41. RC

A little difficult to fit into the 'irregular' chimney in ...

A little difficult to fit into the ‘irregular’ chimney in our old stone house, but once done and the hands washed; keeps the warmth in and the soot out

  42. Adam

Great product! Stops drafts and dirt and environmentally friendly.

I use chimney sheep in 4 out of our 6 chimneys. Our house has a range of fire types and flue sizes. I by far prefer these to chimney balloons which I have also used before because of the ease and convenience of being able to swiftly remove the sheep to light a fire. I like that the main part of the product is environmentally friendly and that it is all British made, plus they really do reduce drafts and stop soot and dust falling down. Great idea and great quality product.

  43. KS

    Three Stars

    Didn’t fit my chimney unfortunately

  44. James P

It works and looks quite sheepy

    It works. Simple as that.

I live in an Edwardian house, built around 1900, with open fire places in most rooms. The reception room at the back can get very cold, in part due to it’s larger working fireplace. As we rarely use the fire, but like to know we have the option, I wanted a way to temporarily seal the chimney.

The Chimney Sheep is simple but very effective. Thick, stiff wool with enough flexibility to fill the irregular shapes around the chimney and cast-iron fire surround. It’s been in place now for over 12 months doing its job.

  45. Guy

    Simple but works brilliantly

This is a cheap and yet great way of stopping all your heating being sucked out of the chimney. It fits together easily and with very simple instructions slots neatly into the chimney preventing any drafts at all. Make sure you accurately measure your chimney and allow a little extra to ensure a snig fit. Great simple product.
