Produced in Yorkshire, our 100% natural sheep wool garden felt is one of our most popular gardening products and can definitely be crowned as our most versatile. It is pretty special (if we do say so ourselves!) as it is made with a thick, dense layer of wool and a layer of jute carrier material. Many other wool underlays use a plastic carrier material which isn’t as forgiving and when broken down can leave microplastics in the soil.

The unique combination of the sheep’s wool and the jute means that our garden felt is:

  • The perfect mulch for you ‘no dig’ enthusiasts
  • Dense– crucial for keeping those pesky weeds away and keeping plants protected!
  • Textured and woolly which will deter slugs and snails
  • Hygroscopic which means that it absorbs moisture but releases it slowly, so your plants won’t need watering as often (hooray!)
  • Full of nitrogen, potassium and phosphate which naturally occurs in the wool and helps with strong, healthy plant growth
  • An excellent growing medium – roots love burrowing their way into it
  • 100% biodegradable and compostable within about a year so completely and utterly environmentally friendly

The felt is 1.4m wide and is priced per linear metre. For example, if you placed an order of five, you would receive a piece of wool felt measuring 5m x 1.4m.

Buy Land Plant Trees

At the core of Chimney Sheep is our Community Interest Company, Buy Land Plant Trees (BLPT). For every purchase you make with us, 20% of the profit facilitates the planting of trees on agriculturally poor land in Cumbria.

We set up BLPT in 2019 as a ‘boots on the ground’ tree planting initiative. The company is run by us and the tree planting is done by us. We do it to help you and us to reduce our impact on the planet. The trees we plant reduce CO2 output as well as contribute to the reduction of flooding and the creation of habitats for wildlife.

BLPT isn’t a tick box exercise nor a distant and detached carbon offset company. In fact, this is as much part of our business as the products we sell and is an integral part of our ethos. We are big believers in the phrase ‘think globally, act locally’ and want to make a genuine difference

Anti slugs

This is great stuff for keeping slugs off seedlings on my allotment.

Great product and well priced. Arrived very promptly. Using to wrap the prickly branches of a monkey puzzle tree whilst moving house - then will be used on the garden.

Great for lining gravel trays

Used for lining gravel trays under propagation cell trays containing tender seedlings. The seedlings have survived hard frosts in an unheated greenhouse with this under the cell trays and the fleece on top of the propagator lids. Will be using this to line my gravel trays for my chilli plants and to sit my tomato planters on.
