A Chimney Cap is a simple way of preventing warm air from escaping up your disused chimney. By closing off a chimney pot, the effects of downdraught are combatted and heat loss is minimised. Paired with an insulating chimney draught excluder at the bottom of your chimney, the two devices will not only work together to keep your home warm, they could save you hundreds of pounds on energy bills too.

Description

Mouled from recyclable ABS thermoplastic, the Terracotta Coloured Chimney Cap (300mm) will fit the majority of round chimney pots in good condition. It’s held securely in place by two spring wires to provide 100% protection. Aerodynamically designed and tested, other benefits of this chimney cowl include:

  • Easy to fit
  • Water resistance
  • Robust design
  • Acts as a chimney birdguard – protecting from nesting birds and other creatures
  • Minimises heat loss
  • Supplied with an integral insect screen to provide additional protection against swarming bees and nesting wasps.

So why do I need a Chimney Sheep too?

As this chimney cap will still allow some air to seep through for ventilation purposes, it’s worth having a Chimney Sheep at the bottom of your chimney. This way, you can guarantee that cold draughts are truly abolished and your home is kept snug and warm.

And remember, not only are you stopping cold draughts from entering your home, the Chimney Cap and Draught Excluder combination will also reduce noise and debris.

How does a chimney cap work?

A chimney cap is held in place by galvanised steel spring wires. It works by slotting over the opening of any chimney pot up to 11” external diameter. The smart ventilated design will still permit constant ventilation of the chimney in order to avoid damp issues.

Please enquire with your local chimney sweep or other contractor with the necessary roofing qualifications about installing a chimney cap.

    Simple but effective

Decided to try this chimney cap which was said to be suitable for a standard pot size which we assumed ours was. This cap is solidly made and has good firm spring legs to secure it in place by pushing these together as they are inserted into the chimney pot. The cap was straight forward to install and is held securely in place by the springy legs. It is low height and not unsightly. Would recommend for a simple but effective solution in capping off an unused chimney whilst still providing necessary air flow into it and preventing bird or insect access.

    2 years on, all good

Purchased these after doing a lot of research. They really are very simple but effective. Had a builder slot 4 on my chimneys in a matter of minutes. Only 4 stars as it’s quite expensive for what is essentially a heavy duty plastic plate.

    Easy to install

My partner installed it very easily. It’s great, it protects from excessive rain falling into pot but still allows ventilation which has helped sort out damp issue on the chimney breast internally. Delivery was very fast and I found it to be fairly priced.

    Very useful

Great item, had a damp patch on my chimney breast for years coming and going when it would rain heavily. Got my roofer to pop these on to the chimney pots and now the damp patch has gone. We have had some heavy showers over the last few months so it has been a good test to see if these work. I am really pleased with them.

    Seems to do the job

We bought this to cover a chimney of a fireplace we have since removed and plastered over. I don’t know much about building trade but was told that we needed to cover the chimney but still allow some airflow into it to prevent any damp problems etc. This product does the job nicely and was easily installed via spring loaded ‘legs’. The only reason I’ve removed 2 stars is that its been up less than a year and I’ve already had to get the ladder out to put it back in place after a particularly stormy night blew it completely off. It did however i pleased to say survive the fall from the roof of our bungalow onto the concrete yard. Hopefully it stays up for a bit longer this time….

An excellent solution to capping off a chimney

The perfect solution to capping off my disused chimney pot. I bought this over 2 years ago and its withstood some tremendous gales and rain and didn’t move at all. The insect guard kept out wasps and flies perfectly. Last week I was back up on the roof to do a little repointing of ridge tiles and I gave this cap a thorough check and its still in perfect condition. I even took it off and replaced it to check on the fixings and they haven’t corroded at all. I highly recommend this product.

The best Invention for redundant Chineys by a mile.

What a great invention for closing off redundant chimney pots.
Prior to buying the C -Cap, I had tried many other cowls for my redundant chimney which in one way or another failed or leaked causing problems inside my house.
The C-Cap saved my bacon (and my ceiling). It arrived quickly and required a few simple screws (included) to assemble, which took only a few minutes. The inner wires were very strong and fitted very snugly into my chimney, allowing a small weatherproof air gap for ventilation.
We have since suffered several Winter storms with gale force winds but my trusty C Cap has remained strong and solid but more importantly, it has kept my new ceiling beneath dry and sound making this product a superb investment.

Being constructed of strong ABS like plastic, there is also no longer the risk of a falling chimney cowl as once fixed in place, this cowl is staying put. Perfect!

    Solved our damp problem

Easy to pop in (after braving the roof) why the description does not state sizes I don’t know-seller would sell more surely? This is suitable for up to 30cm chimney pots. We kept having rain cone down/smelly and this has solved it-just airing out nicely now.
    Would throughly recommend.

    Chimney c cap terracotta.

We had a wet patch on our bedroom wall and we couldn’t see any obvious reason for this as the brickwork etc appeared sound so we thought perhaps the water was running down the chimney and finding it’s way into the wall, so we ordered the cap for the chimney. Getting to the chimney was awkward as above a conservatory so we ordered a cherry picker. My husband went up and it just slotted onto place. Turned out the problem was the chimney and wall has dried out. Also the cover is still Insitu after several very windy days (we live near the coast) good quality product very happy customer.

Does the job well and offers a cheap solution

These fitted my 8 to 9 inch chimneys really well. The builder said that once in place the springs fitted with enough force to probably to break a cracked chimney so I can’t see these being dislodged even in the highest of winds. Good product and a cheap way to seal a disused chimney. Once fitted it leaves a gap to let the chimney breath and this gap has an integral insect screen to stop any bugs taking up home.

Easy to fit, looks like part of chimney

This was used to prevent rainwater entering a disused chimney whilst maintaining sufficient ventilation to avoid accumulation of damp.
A little self assembly is necessary to attach the vent grille and secure 2 spring clips to the cap with the provided screws and washers. Installation into the pot doesn’t require tools and was a simple two handed job, guiding the metal clips into the pot and pushing the cap down. (ladder stability needed, my stomach against the stack acted as a third point of contact)!

The only subtle let-down, dropping the review to 4 stars is the sturdiness of the interior insect grille, it’s outer ring is very light in construction, with some small alignment lugs which fit against the inside of the cap, it’s overall diameter was a little too large, so the lugs squeezed in and cracked the outer ring, these didn’t affect strength or effectiveness and I was happy to continue installing the cap.

    Cap :)

My chimney has a cap :) The idiots before us took out a small chimney (think for kitchen stove, old house) but didn’t bother to cap it. On investigation of a dripping noise, and ruined plasterboard, I was surprised to see sky through the whole where they had boxed off the chimney – Cap in pace, job done, went on with no issues.

    Confidence inspiring fit

Bought this to cover my decommissioned chimney. The fit is very tight, which is great giving confidence that it’s going to stay in place. Although tight it was extremely easy to fit too. We’ve had some strong winds since. It’s still there and the noise I used to experience from the chimney being open has now reduced too.

This was easy to fit and has securely stayed in place when faced with high winds on the west coast of Scotland.

    Chim chimanee, chim chim charoo

I took a guess-timate at the size of my chimney pot as i couldn’t get to my roof to measure. Luckily it fitted on arrival. I borrowed a roof ladder and did the job myself. Scariest time of my life! Not got a head for heights which didnt help at all. Fitting took seconds – the spring arms have to be squeezed a bit to get past the lip of the pot then just taps down into place. Great fit and no chance of getting lifted out by high winds. Just enough tension and grab to hug the pot. Perfect.

    Highly recommended

A very simple and inexpensive way of capping a chimney. It is unobtrusive and extremely effective, taking only minutes to install.
The C cap replaced a ceramic cowel which had been ok. when the chimney was in use, but did not deter nesting jackdaws once it was decommissioned. The C cap certainly has them baffled!!!

No more having to worry about the weather.
Keeps the wind and rain out and the warmth in. Provides a tiny bit of ventilation and even comes with an insect guard that you can choose to fit or not. I did, having known someone who suffered from bees in their chimney.
Fits in seconds and is of a good heavy duty build so should last for many years. My chimney was 270mm wide (outside measurement) ideal for this 300mm (internal) wide cap.
The metal sprung arms hold the cap in place inside the chimney pot very firmly but a word of warning – you can not fit this system if your chimney pot is cracked so check this first if you can.
Looks great when fitted and I was even able to mastic glue some seagull spikes on top. All in all this is a great product if you do not use your chimney any more and just want to protect it from the weather.

    Three Stars

Difficult to fit, when standing against a chimney stack, as springs are rather strong.

Chimney C Cap for dis-used chimney

Recently we experienced very bad weather and we had an awful lot of rain water fall through our chimney pot and flood everywhere – so we found out the hard way our new houses chimney is not capped or blocked off. This cover, fitted the bill perfectly, it was easy to assemble with the 2 U bendy holding clips – and the inclusion of an insect trap, so that flies, bees, wasps don;t fly up and under and into front room, which also acts as “air hole/ventilation” too. Dead easy to put over our chimney pot (asked windo cleaner a huge favour as we don’t own a ladder) he just plonked it on, on the angle and gave it a firm but gentle thwack, and hey presto. It is already noticeable that the wind no longer howls down, and we have had no further rain coming down. I can’t vouch for its warmth retaining abilities, when the heating is on – as its only July (feels like October though, lol) – hence the 4 stars, we also just instaled an electric fire over the hearth hole anyway. But good solid and very reasonably priced cap that is more or less invisible when you look up too – its not ugly or in your face, and if your chimney pot hole is less that 280mm, i would whole heartedly recommend.
